In 2012, TLC implemented a program which proved to be a great success.  In fact, it has been recognized by the Ethiopian government as a model for community and economic development. Our Income Generating Activities Program (IGA) offers TLC families micro-business loans of around $300 to start small businesses.  With extensive training and support from TLC staff, these businesses have provided families with a steady stream of income.

Loan recipients have time to get their businesses started, after which they begin monthly installments to repay their loans and place money into saving accounts.  After the loan money is fully repaid, the savings is given to the families to invest further in their businesses.  The seed money is then used to help another TLC family. The IGA project has provided hope for over 100 families.  Each recipient testifies to the sense of security and stability that their increased income has provided for themselves and their children.

Many of the TLC guardians have no reliable source of income.  Although they desire to work and support their families, often health issues or the changing economic climate prevent them from finding jobs.  Although TLC works to meet many of the children’s needs, it is not possible for us to provide for all the needs of the families. IGA offers a way for the families to provide for themselves and assists TLC in creating a sustainable way to care for these children.
